Some stuff are grouped together because of their connection, others because of their symbiotic relationship, and others for their seeming similarities or coincidental “sameness.” Three-in-one instant coffee come in sachets that spells a perfect combination of ingredients that make up a coffee drink, but it does not end here as there are still varieties of these of coffee drinks that suits the taste of the drinker.
Books also fall into groupings or categories that are gathered together to suit the “taste” of readers. In the same manner, the Tanakh or the canon of the Jewish Bible contains slections of Jewish Scriptures that are grouped together. One of these is the Hamesh Megillot or simply the “Five Scrolls.” They are all classified as Ketuvim or “Writings.” The Jewish canon recognizes and accepts Scriptural books as part of the Hebrew Bible and it considers the five Megillot important as they are read in synagogues in the course of the year. These relatively short books are also part of the Christian Bible which are found in the Old Testament.
The following are the five books of the Hamesh Megillot as they appear in the Hebrew Bible:
SONG OF SONGS. Known as Megilath Ruth, this book is also known as the Song of Songs of Solomon or Shir ha-sharim in Hebrew. It talks about the relationship of a man and a woman that begins with courtship and ends in consummation. The Jews look at this as an allegory of the relationship of God and Israel. For Christians, this is sometimes used as an allegory of the relationship between Jesus Christ and His church.
BOOK OF RUTH. This book is about Naomi and her daughter in-law Ruth who gave birth to son named Obed who is to become King David’s grandfather.
BOOK OF LAMENTATIONS. This book, called Eikhah in Hebrew, is written by the Prophet Jeremiah, and it talks about the coming destruction of Jerusalem as result of the unfaithfulness of the “Chosen People” of God.
ECCLESIASTES. The book known as Quoheleth in Hebrew (meaning “preacher“) is a compilation of the author’s personal experience and talks about man and the fragility of his actions. Emphasis is placed on the value of wisdom.
BOOK OF ESTHER. Also known as the Megilla, the book has been the basis of the Jewish celebration of Purim. It contains the story of Esther, a Jewish Queen of Persia, and how she saved the Jews from certain genocide that was planned as a result of envy in the royal court of the Persian king Ahasuerus.
The five Megillot depicts the Jewish courage and wisdom as well as hard-earned lessons as a result of weakness and sinfulness. We also have to come up with our best when our faith is put to the test. These books are worth reading to give us some degree of knowledge that will strengthen our virtues needed to keep our faith strong and alive.
